Self-storage in London is full of things that arrived in a hurry and leave the same way. Getting a load into a unit, back out again, or across town to a cheaper facility is ordinary work for a van and two people.
It is also a job with its own quirks, most of which are about the building rather than the load.
Storage facilities have access hours, lift queues, trolley routes and loading bays that fill up. None of it is difficult if you know it in advance.
What storage facilities actually require
Access hours vary widely and are not always what the website suggests. Some sites close their loading bay earlier than the building, and a few restrict large-vehicle access to certain hours. We check before booking the slot.
The distance from the bay to the unit matters more than the drive across London does. A unit at the far end of the third floor with one working goods lift is a slow job, and that is what the time goes on.
Most facilities require you to be present, or to have authorised us in writing in advance. Arranging that takes a phone call and it is worth making before the day rather than standing at a barrier.
If you are moving between facilities, the receiving site usually needs the unit set up first. We can carry the load while you sort the paperwork, but only if the unit exists.
